VTB Capital announces its first cross-border M&A deal into Spain

19 October 2015
VTB Capital is advising Portuguese investment fund Finpro on the sale of its shareholding in Spanish port company Grup Maritim TCB. GMTCB is being sold to APM Terminals for approximately US$1 billion. The deal is VTB Capital’s first cross border M&A deal into Spain and its third cross-border transaction in the international infrastructure market in the past month.

Grup Maritim TCB is Spain’s second largest port operator. The company owns 11 container terminals, including international terminals in Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Guatemala and Turkey.

Riccardo Orcel, Deputy CEO of VTB Group and Head of Global Banking at VTB Capital, said “With VTB Capital achieving a record market share in the Russian investment banking market it is pleasing to see our strategy of developing a highly focused international practice is also bearing fruit. The Finpro transaction is the latest in a strong run of international deals that VTB Capital has advised on since the summer that include five cross-border M&A deals and feature a good geographical spread - extending across Spain, Portugal, Turkey, China and the United States. The acclaim we have received from clients we have worked with gives me great confidence that our international business will continue to expand together with our strong advisory pipeline that includes significant transactions in China and Africa.”

Peter Stonor, Head of Transport, Infrastructure and Industrials at VTB Capital, said: "This transaction emphasizes VTB Capital’s expertise in the international infrastructure market. It is the third consecutive cross-border transaction for VTB Capital in the space of a month. In September, VTB Capital advised a major Chinese client on the acquisition of Kumport, a leading container terminal in Istanbul, as well as Turkey’s Yildirim Group on the acquisition of Portuguese port company Tertir. Some of the world’s largest companies choose VTB Capital as a trusted partner. This highlights our team’s experience and renowned expertise in financial advisory services and in implementing infrastructure projects."
